In January, Jamie Pearson and his girlfriend, Nadine, headed off to Tanzania to attempt to climb to the highest point on the great continent of Africa. The trek was 6 days up and 2 days down and timed so they would summit Mt Kilimanjaro on Jamie’s 30th birthday. That’s a bucket list tick!
While planning the trek and speaking to others, Jamie and Nadine thought it would be great to raise money for a good cause. They decided to support Dream Big Ghana Foundation, as they have known about the work of Dream Big Ghana NGO for a number of years and have previously stayed at Meet Me There lodge. The reason for this familiarity is that Jamie’s father decided he needed a retirement project a few years ago, and decided to set up a mango farm in Ghana! With the idea that they will visit Ghana at least once a year, Jamie and Nadine decided to raise money for a charity that they can keep on visiting over the years. They want to see the benefits first hand as to where the money goes, and to potentially help out in future projects as well.
Jamie reports that “the climb itself was incredible as we went through so many different environments on our way up, from rainforest to scrubland and through alpine deserts and then snow. The team we had with us were amazing, extremely knowledgeable about the mountain and different plants and animals found at different heights and also great at picking our spirits up after long days out in the elements. After six days in heavy rain we were delighted to make the climb through the night and reach the summit on a beautiful clear morning. It was so much difficult than we expected, but an incredible way to spend the week and see in my 30th – we’re so pleased we made it!”
Dream Big Ghana Foundation would like to thank Jamie and Nadine and all those who donated to their Just Giving page and sponsored them. As Jamie says – “it’s amazing to know that we have managed to raise £2,045 towards the building of three family toilets for one of the communities in the region.”
