Dream Big Ghana NGO

Dream Big Ghana NGO was established in 2010 to support local communities in the villages of Dzita and Dizita-Agbledomi in the Volta Region of Ghana. The NGO delivers programmes focusing on eco-sanitation, sports development, health and education. It is based at an award winning not-for-profit eco-lodge near Keta (Meet Me There African Home Lodge, www.ghanameetmethere.com). The Lodge hosts a well-established and resourced Community Learning Centre, which is a hub for various educational and cultural initiatives and a youth sports coaching project.

Dream Big Ghana NGO’s sanitation programme has provided sustainable compost toilets for more than 1500 local people who would otherwise be forced to use the bushes or the beach. The NGO prides itself on construction quality, employing a team of experienced local masons. The EcoSan design also incorporates a hand hygiene facility based on the use of the ‘Veronica bucket’. Staff provide users with hand-washing demonstrations in order to maximise the health benefits of access to safe sanitation.

In addition to the construction of more than 120 family EcoSan toilets, the NGO completed the construction of its second school toilet block in 2020 and is monitoring its use carefully. The school toilet blocks serve 500 and 150 pupils respectively, with EcoSan units as well as urinals and menstrual hygiene management spaces for female students and teachers. Dream Big Ghana NGO has also completed the refurbishment of existing toilet facilities at two local schools, hugely improving the experience of pupils and teachers. The following reports contain recent evaluations of the sanitation programme:
