One of the objectives of Dream Big Ghana Foundation is to develop the evidence base for our programmes of work in the Volta Region. Through the generosity of our donors, we have funded the construction of two EcoSan toilet blocks in schools in the Dream Big Ghana NGO catchment area. We wanted to see how the first DBG block was functioning, but also to evaluate the situation in the other schools in Dzita and Dzita-Agbledomi.
Led by Dominic Bride, the NGO team carried out a detailed survey of conditions in four local schools in February of this year. The results do not make for comfortable reading – the toilet cubicles were dark and smelly and, at the time of the survey, hand washing and menstrual hygiene facilities were almost non-existent.
Dream Big Ghana NGO has already begun a programme of remedial action based on the findings of the survey. In partnership with the government and other NGOs, we are beginning a programme of work to improve the facilities in all local schools. It’s the least that students and teachers deserve.
