Dream Big Ghana NGO

Dream Big Ghana NGO was established in 2010 to support local communities in the villages of Dzita and Dizita-Agbledomi in the Volta Region of Ghana. The NGO delivers programmes focusing on eco-sanitation, sports development, health and education. It is based at an award winning not-for-profit eco-lodge near Keta (Meet Me There African Home Lodge). The Lodge hosts a well-established and resourced Community Learning Centre, which is a hub for various educational and cultural initiatives and a youth sports coaching project.

Dream Big Ghana NGO’s sanitation programme has provided sustainable compost toilets for more than 2000 local people who would otherwise be forced to use the bushes or the beach. The NGO prides itself on construction quality, employing a team of experienced local masons. The EcoSan design also incorporates a hand hygiene facility based on the use of the ‘Veronica bucket’. Staff provide users with hand-washing demonstrations in order to maximise the health benefits of access to safe sanitation.

In addition to the construction of more than 120 family EcoSan toilets (each serving around 20 people), the NGO completed the construction of its second school toilet block in 2020 and is monitoring its use carefully. The school toilet blocks serve 500 and 150 pupils respectively, with EcoSan units as well as urinals and menstrual hygiene management spaces for female students and teachers. Dream Big Ghana NGO has also completed the refurbishment of existing toilet facilities at two local schools, hugely improving the experience of pupils and teachers. Denyigba Lorlor NGO

Denyigba Lorlor NGO sits on 3.5 acres of lush forest and farmland near Wli falls, in the central mountainous area of the Volta Region. The land is farmed organically using traditional, sustainable methods.

The NGO engages the local community in planting trees to preserve and repopulate the forest. At the local scale trees provide food, medicinal products, shade from the sun, improved soil quality and hydrological functions. At the national scale, trees and forests promote climate change adaption. In 2019, Denyigba Lorlor NGO donated 1500 saplings to local people and their growth is being monitored closely. With the help of local government agencies and volunteers, the tree planting programme is being expanded significantly in 2020.

Denyigba Lorlor NGO promotes traditional African approaches to well-being and lifestyle, celebrating local traditions and delivering sought-after music and painting workshops. The workshops help young people to understand their heritage and express their creativity, thus improving their educational prospects and developing local leaders.

Dzita Turtle Protection

Dzita Turtle Protection is an initiative set up in 2013 to protect the sea turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs on a 20 km stretch of the Atlantic coast near the village of Dzita. Turtle hunting is illegal in Ghana, but local people struggle to make ends meet and turtles can provide a lot of food for a family.

The turtle laying season in Dzita runs from October to March.  Dzita Turtle Protection employs a team of six local fisherman who patrol the beach for 3 hours either side of the high tide.  This provides employment for local people.

Often the team is called out by someone in the community who has seen a turtle laying her eggs or has seen one being captured. The patrol team aims to protect and sometimes rescue the mother turtle, helping her to return to the sea. Dzita Turtle Protection also relocates the eggs to a place that is safe from scavenging dogs and protects the young hatchlings, helping them to find their way to the sea.
